Why do you focus on spay/neuter?

Romania Animal Rescue believes that spay/neuter surgery (aka surgical sterilization) is the only humane, sustainable and truly efficient method to control homeless and stray animal populations. Surgical sterilization has the potential to save thousands of animal lives by ensuring that no unwanted litters are born. In poor countries like Romania, unwanted litters are often abandoned on the streets, in parking lots or in dumpsters. By surgically sterilizing cats and dogs across Romania, we can ensure that fewer unwanted animals end up on the streets.

Do you offer any vet volunteering opportunities?

We would love to have as many volunteers as possible to help out at our spay/neuter events. There are so many ways in which you can help so please contact us so we can discuss what opportunities suit your interests best.

How do I know my donation will be used for the intended purpose?

Please consult our financial reports for a breakdown of expenditure for previous years. If you indicated that you want your donation to be spent on a specific project, we will honor your wish. The best way to support our programs is to donate to our General Fund. Money from the General Fund can be distributed where the need is biggest.

How can I access your financial reports?

It's very important to us to show donors how their money is spent. You can find the latest financial filings and audits on Guidestar. There is no charge to set up an account with Guidestar.

I don't have money to give. Are there other ways in which I can help?

Every help is important to us, financial or otherwise. If you can't make a financial contribution please visit our Give Time page to see how you can volunteer your time and skills. You can also share our Happy Animal Stories on your personal blog or social media account to help spread the word about the work we do. Last but not least, you can support our work at no additional cost to you, by shopping online at amazonsmile.com and indicate that you want them to redirect 0.5% of the cost of the transaction to Romania Animal Rescue. Thank you so much for your support!

I want to adopt a dog/cat. Where should I go first?

If you live outside Romania, please see our Adopt a Friend page which holds information about adoption centers and shelters in Romania, and make contact directly with them. If you live in Romania and can't find an adoption center in your town, you should ask the City Hall (Primaria) where the city animal shelter is as they have animals for adoption as well. The most vulnerable animals are the homeless ones, so you can always take home one of the animals you see on the streets. Thank you for adopting!

My neighbor abandons kittens/puppies on the street. What should I do?

If possible, try to convince your neighbor to keep the new litter next time, to spay and neuter his or her animals or to contact Homeless Animal Hospital to see how the animals can benefit from a sterilization campaign taking place in their area.

What should I do if I see an injured animal on the streets of Romania?

If possible, please arrange for the animal to be transported to a veterinary center for investigations. Please do not leave the animal on the streets as rogue dog collectors can pick up the dogs and lock them up in high-kill shelters, with no chance for treatment or recovery. You should take the animal to your nearest veterinary clinic as soon as possible. If there isn't a veterinary clinic near you, please contact us and we can direct you to a network of animal rescuers and can point you in the right direction.

How can I support your work?

There are many ways in which you can support our work. We always need more funds to be able to spay and neuter as many animals as possible, so you could start by making a donation. If you can't help financially, please read about all the other ways to get involved.

I or someone I know has a cat/dog who has not been surgically sterilized. Can you help?

We'd love to help as many animals as we can, but we don't always have the funds or the capacity to help. To find out what we can do for you and your community, please contact us so we can discuss this. We need to know where you are located and if we can set up a sterilization a campaign in your area so that we can benefit as many animals as possible.

ABOUT OUR ORGANIZATION

Do you do anything else apart from spay/neuter?

Yes, we do. Our strategy to save animals is based on a four-level approach, which covers Spay and NeuterVeterinary TrainingHomeless Animal Hospital and Education programs. Visit each of the project pages to learn more.

Do you have any political or religious affiliation?

No, we don't. We are proud to help all animals from all backgrounds, irrespective of the religion or political affiliation of their owners or rescuers.

Do you work with the government of Romania or any other country?

We are a member of the Combined Federal Campaign in the USA, but we do not work with any government. Our international chapter, Animal Spay Neuter International, applies for local government permits in order to be able to work in different countries around the world, but we don't have any working contracts with the governments of those countries nor do we receive any government funding.

Why do you focus on Romania?

The ex-communist country of Romania is one of the poorest in Eastern Europe. An acute lack of veterinary services and wide spread poverty, coupled with corrupt and inefficient animal control management make Romania home to an ever increasing stray animal population, topping 2 million dogs and cats. There has never been more need for the work that we do than now.

What is the relationship between RAR and ASNI?

Animal Spay Neuter International (ASNI) is the international branch of Romania Animal Rescue (RAR).  ASNI raises funds to send RAR vets outside Romania for spay and neuter campaigns, vet training and general veterinary services, as needed.

What is spay/neuter?

Spaying and neutering are both types of surgical sterilization - a safe, effective and permanent method of contraception. Spaying is removing the reproductive organs from a female animal. Neutering is removing the reproductive organs from a male animal.

ABOUT SURGICAL STERILIZATION (SPAY/NEUTER)

Can I help organize a spayathon in my town/village?

We would love to help you do that. The information you need is sensitive and complex, so please contact us so we can start a conversation and find out more about your plans.

What's a spayathon?

A spayathon is a word invented by our founder, Nancy Janes, defined as "a campaign for high volume spay and neuter surgeries, whereby 30 surgeries or more are performed". Like a marathon, a spayathon is an endurance exercise. The vet team is working around the clock to spay and neuter as many animals as possible, in the shortest possible period of time, without compromising the quality of the service provided. When traveling to remote areas of Romania it is important for us to surgically sterilize as many animals as needed, so that we can make a real impact on their lives and that of their community, before we move on to another campaign in a different part of the country.

What happens to the homeless animals after they are spayed/neutered?

They are returned to their caregivers who brought them in. Any emergency veterinary care they require is done at the time of the spay/neuter surgery. When we have volunteers available, we also perform grooming and help remove parasites.

Do you help spay/neuter stray dogs?

Yes. We perform spay and neuter surgeries for all stray and homeless animals that are brought to us by individual rescuers.

Can anyone have their pet spay/neutered by RAR?

Yes as long as the animal is healthy enough for the procedure.  As our funds allows us, we can perform free surgeries for pet owners or animal caregivers who do not have the financial means to pay the vet fees.

How many spay/neuters do you do in a year?

We now have the capacity to perform approximately 10,000 surgeries in a year. The need is far greater as almost each household in rural Romania has at least one cat or dog. These areas are usually underdeveloped, lacking the most basic infrastructure. Romania Animal Rescue is continuously raising funds to be able to organize spay and neuter campaigns in some of the most remote corners of the country where there are virtually no veterinary services available for hundreds of miles around. Please consider making a donation so that we can continue our work in Romania.

Who performs the spay/neuter surgeries?

Romania Animal Rescue is working with Romanian veterinarians and veterinary technicians from both Romania and the UK, who perform the surgeries on behalf of the organization. Read more about the Romania Animal Rescue veterinarian team.

Where do you perform spay/neuters?

Romania Animal Rescue strives to provide spay and neuter surgeries across Romania, particularly in remote rural areas where there are no veterinary services. Animal Spay Neuter International - our international chapter - performs spay and neuter surgeries around the world, in the Dominican Republic, Suriname, Portugal, Greece, Bulgaria and provides financial support for local organizations to provide spay and neuter surgeries in Panama, USA, UK, and India.

How much does a spay/neuter cost?

It costs $25 to perform a spay/neuter surgery for a cat or a dog.

Are you a registered non-profit organization?

Yes. In the USA we are a registered 501(c)(3) under the name Romania Animal Rescue, Inc. Tax ID 72-1546354. In the UK we are a registered with the Charity Commission under the name Animal Spay Neuter International, Registration Number 1172316.

Do you work only in Romania?

Our international chapter - Animal Spay Neuter International - has participated in spay/neuter campaigns in other impoverished countries including Bulgaria, The Dominican Republic, Greece, India, Panama, Portugal, Romania, and Suriname, as our funds allow. The majority of our work is done in Romania, where the need for improved animal welfare and stray animal population control are overwhelming.

How and when was the organization set up?

Romania Animal Rescue was founded in 2003 in California. Read more about us and the RAR story.
