This newsletter is dedicated to Dale and Charlotte Kooistra's beloved Maggie. Dale and Charlotte held Maggie as she was euthanized. She was a beautiful 13 year old golden retriever they had had since she was less than a year. She never dug a hole, ran away, or misbehaved. She could take her leash and after it was unhooked from her collar, grab it and make loops until she got it all in her mouth, carry it home, then unwind it. Dale and Charlotte took her leash off a couple of houses away when they walked her so she could proudly perform this trick she must have taught herself. She had metastatic melanoma. There is now a vaccine for melanoma for dogs. It is new, costly, and not relevant in every situation.
This newsletter is also dedicated to the loving memory of Butter, the dog of Mr. and Mrs. Winternheimer. Butter is a lab mix who died of cancer in Evansville.
Dear All,
I am pleased to announce that we managed to register the new caravan. The plates are custom made B 777 VET. The plans for this year are extremely ambitious. We plan to take the caravan to Transylvania (the Vampire land) to spay and neuter and also teach local vets that would like to learn from us how to operate. Another project will be spaying the dogs at the train stations. They are always in danger of being hit by trains, especially the offsprings. This is our goal: No more litters!
For the moment the caravan is empty; there is no equipment inside. We have to improvise the tables and the lights inside. Also we would like to have a big autoclave in order to have 40-50 sterile surgical packs available every day. We are asking you the wonderful people that support RAR to help us get the basic stuff such as autoclave, surgical tables and lights for the caravan.
Thank you for all your generosity and help! Dr Aurelian Stefan, D.V.M.
Hello Members,
The success of the Spayathons in 2009 has proven that spay/neuter is a humane way to reduce the overpopulation of strays. We funded the spay/neuter of nearly 1000 animals last year. We will continue the Spayathon program in 2010.
We are having Spay Day 2010 (an HSUS/HSI program) in Craiova, Romania, with the Drs. Aurelian and Petrisor Stefan in February. We will be doing a spayathon for Glina/Layla dumped dogs as soon as the weather warms up a bit, per their request. RAR will be doing our HUGE Spayathon in Bucharest with Group Initiative for Animals (GIA) and Romania Animal Rescue Foundation (RARF) in April/May. Dr. Olson will be arriving from the USA to volunteer her skills to help Dr. Aurelian and Dr. Petrisor spay/neuter over 500 dogs. They will be working with vets in Tecuci on techniques for modern spay/neuter procedures and other surgical needs for a week, and then will be off to do free spay/neuter for a shelter.
Dr. Aurelian will be a presenter at the Humane Society of the US and Humane Society International's EXPO on May 12-15 in Nashville, TN. This is a great honor!
Later in 2010 Dr. Aurelian will be going to Turda and Cluj-Napoca for spay/neuter training for vets. He is also arranging to go to Hateg to coordinate a spay/neuter program for them. RAR is sending Dr. Aurelian as our representative to Sibiu to coordinate spay/neuter and veterinary clinic events for them as well.
Wishing the best to you and yours in 2010, Nancy Janes, President, CEO and Founder Romania Animal Rescue, Inc.

Samantha
Pictured above is Samantha, the 6 week old puppy that was found with her siblings in a trash bin right after she was born. She still had her umbilical cord attached. Samantha is from Cluj-Napoca and will go to Portland, Oregon for adoption!

Betty and Lola
We'd like to bring you good news about two dogs, Betty and Lola. Betty has now been spayed! She will be ready to travel to the Janes ranch, along with Vlad, when her stitches are removed. Lola is still under care; she has ascites, but is undergoing treatment. RAR covered the costs for these treatments, thanks to all the wonderful donations!
Association for Animal Protection
Ioana Diaconu, president of Association for Animal Protection "A Second Chance", found these puppies. They were abandoned in a field in Glina, about eight miles southeast of Bucharest. They have now been transported to Laila. 15 females have been spayed. Many more dogs in Glina are in need of getting spayed/neutered; the dogs are almost all left outside in the yards, but they are not sterilized. Ioana is looking for funding support to feed the dogs at the shelter. The winter months are especially tough for them, since the dogs need to eat more food. Please contact Nancy if you would like to contribute to this shelter.
For Your Information
Best Friends Animal Society has just written a story about Romania Animal Rescue. It tells a good history of us and the work involved in promoting animal welfare in Romania.
We have entered Anna Marie, Ciao and Samantha in this Pet Photo Contest. Please use these links to vote for Anna Marie, for Ciao and for Samantha!
Ciao was found by Dr. Aurelian Stefan at a gas station in Romania. He was one of the many dogs and puppies that live at the country's gas stations and busy intersections. Dr. Aurelian found him to be an extremely kind and good-natured pet, and adopted him as his gas station dog traveling companion!
Ciao crossed the Rainbow Bridge last year. In memory of the courage and friendship he offered to many humans and especially to his owner, Dr. Aurelian. he has been entered in the Spay Day Pet Photo Contest. In his honor, all vote donations for Ciao will go to the spay/neuter of gas station and train station dogs, who, by no fault of their own, live at the mercy of humans and in extremely dangerous situations, risking the chance of being hit by cars and trains.
Sibiu in June 2009 - Sterilization Campaign
Jenny Vestlund was one of the volunteers at the Sibiu Spayathon last June. She has written about her experiences during her trip to Romania for this event. The following is an excerpt from her blog. Read the full blog here.
Our association here in Finland, Kodittomien koirien ystavat, had been cooperating with the Romanian association Animal Life for almost a year--rehoming their dogs and helping them financially whenever we could. I had personally visited Romania several times so I knew what I could expect, however this was the first time I would actually got to follow a Spayathon from up close.
We arrived in Sibiu and were as always warmly welcomed by the members of Animal Life--people that put their heart and soul rescuing these animals that no-one else cares for. I have always admired their ability to do fulltime jobs and running a shelter at the same time. They have no spare time, no holidays and no money; whatever extra they have goes to the dogs. I truly adore these people!
The Spayathon took place Sunday and Monday--the last day in May and first in June. In the morning we were all gathering outside the hotel we were staying at, the veterinary team from Bucharest had arrived the night before. After a quick introduction we drove to the clinic of Dan Gheoca, a very kind man who helps the volunteers in Animal Life a lot. He had generously offered to let the Spayathon take place in his clinic.
The vet team immediately started working and the first dogs arrived at ten o'clock. Animal Life had done a lot of advertising in the newspapers and they were expecting a lot of people. And a lot of people came, and when there was a small break they neutered some of the dogs from the shelter. I have never seen a vet clinic so hectic yet so organized. Everybody knew their position and everybody were invited to help, even if it was just small things like shaving a dog before the surgery or keeping them warm afterwards.
We finished off the first day at about 6 PM and I have never been as exhausted in my life. The volunteers of Animal Life were also tired and one of the veterinarians, Dr. Aurelian, made a joke about why it was always the volunteers being the most tired although the veterinarians do the hardest part of the job. We had a good laugh and we all agreed that was the case.
The next day would be even more special. The World Woof Tour was coming to town to film the Spayathon and the evening before we were all supposed to go out for dinner. However, Joanne and Oscar the dog decided to stay at the hotel because they were tired, which is understandable since it was their 13th country visited in two weeks! Instead, we met with Livia from Bucharest and her partner. They were guiding Joanne and the filming crew during their stay in Romania. We had a pleasant evening although we almost fell asleep at the dining table.
The next morning while sitting at the breakfast table I hear the sound of paws marching down the stairs. Yes, it was Oscar. He took his place under a table while Joanne and the camera man ate, but I'm sure he was given one or two treats during the time. Later we all met outside the hotel. Joanne wanted to film at Animal Life's shelter first and afterwards we went to the Spayathon. They interviewed Dr. Aurelian and got some great shots of the surgeries. Joanne was clearly enjoying herself and the good company of the vets, but the camera man seemed somewhat dizzy watching a neutering process so up close.
After Joanne, Oscar and the rest of the crew left we continued our day. Again we weren't finished until after 6 PM and the result from two days work was astonishing: 111 dogs and cats neutered! I could hardly believe my ears.
As a foreigner in Romania, you are always prepared for the worst, but I have to say this Spayathon was one of my happiest memories from Romania. To see all people come together and work like mad for little or no pay, and all the owners who were so worried about their beloved dogs and grateful to Animal Life and the veterinarians for sterilizing their pet, thus giving it a better life. Some owners donated as much as they could spare--and even if it was only equivalent of 3 dollars it was a lovely gesture. Many of them left with tears in their eyes, hugging their pets as if they were never to let go.
You could tell by the way Dr. Aurelian and the rest of the veterinary team was working that they were very experienced. Not many of the rest of us could keep up with their pace and yet they treated each dog as an individual and with great compassion, and it was heart-warming to see how they some times took a minute to cuddle with the dogs. I have nothing but great respect for these people.
Thank you so much Romania Animal Rescue for the work you are doing, it really does make a difference! And thank you all donors who make Spayathons like these possible. Through this synopsis, I wish I can convey you some of the joy, happiness and gratefulness we all experienced during these days and above all: the compassion we feel for the animals in this land of suffering.

What We Need Now
Veterinary supplies for our new Mobile Clinic! Currently, our vets are pulling the caravan from town to town with Dr. Aurelian's car. We are seeking to outfit the mobile clinic with an operating table and lights so that we can have the indoor space for spay/neuter, the cages, the equipment, and everything right at the vet's fingertips. The vets will have electricity, water, and all the equipment they need for spay/neuter on the road!
Don't forget to visit our Wishlist page for more ways to supply our Spayathons. We have supplies listed at varying price levels to make donating accessible to everyone's budget. The items donated will be shipped directly to Dr. Aurelian in Romania for use in local Spayathons. A donor recently commented, "I wanted fellow donors to realize how easy it is to order supplies for Dr. Aurelian through the link you gave me and how good it felt to be doing something so directly related to the actual spaying and neutering events. Donating money is equally meaningful; I found it fulfilling in a different way to know I could click on, purchase supplies, know they would be shipped and used directly during the events as Dr. Aurelian suggested we do."
Thank You To
Thank you GIA and RARF for coordinating all the plans for this event! Thank you Mary and Bill for funding the spay/neuter of 500 dogs and puppies!
With more donations from sponsors and our wonderful donors, we can do even more spay/neuter! Only $22 per spay/neuter - and you too can make the change that is so important for the animals in Romania! For $220, you can spay/neuter ten dogs or puppies! For $2200 - 100 spay/neuters! Our vets are skilled and will not stop the spay/neuter until the funds run out, so let's really make a difference. The infrastructure will be all set up, so let's make a HUGE commitment to change the life of the animals! Remember, an unaltered male and and unaltered female dog, in their lifetime and the lifetime of their offspring, can produce 67,000 puppies! (information from Dogs on Death Row) Let's stop this cycle while we can! This is a hands on mission that YOU can accomplish!
While in Bucharest, we will be inviting impoverished and pensioned citizens to bring in the animals they are guardians for so that we can spay/neuter them for free. We are seeking donations of de-parasite treatment and vaccinations as well as financial support so that we can spay/neuter more than 500 animals in this 3 week period. We will also be accepting animals from those who can afford to support our spay/neuter program with donations so that we can in turn do more spay/neuters for the needy!
